Osceola

Osceola County Run

Was heading back north from a visit with my family and decided to head over to 131 through because M115 was closed for construction.

Across the main road there is an airport west of here in the area.

Found this main path that headed east through the south side of town.

There is a skateboard park just off the trail.

First glimpse of the old train bridge. This trail is a rails to trails type path.

Closer look at this amazing little bridge.

The Muskegon River goes under that bridge.

On the north side of town I ran by the school. Very cool run.

Was done in Clare county visiting my parents and wanted to hit another county. Decided to drive to Evart. One cool thing about Evart is that the rail to trail system that I was running on in Clare county continues through this one too! One of the coolest things about the trail is the old train bridge that goes over the Muskegon river. Also M115 had road construction that took me on a detour to Marion to get downstate, so it was nice to drive through this county to join up with US131 to get home.

Antrim

Antrim County Run

This was a run where my phone failed me because I must have hit a button and didn’t realize it. So I have no idea what my time was on this run, but my wife said it was about 40 min.

We drove out to Elk Rapids together and took this shot before the run. Lisa went for a walk while I ran. Thank you so much Lisa.

First road heading east on the south side of Bass Lake.

At the end of the above road I ran into this golf course.

Heading west on the North east side of the lake. Was pretty quite in this area. Not a lot of houses.

On this road I didn’t realize that the roads broke until I was halfway through my run. I kept going back and forth until I finally looked at my phone with an expanded view. Had to find a wa to the other road. It was easy on foot but not possible with a car. Would have been cool to know this prior to starting the route.

One of the few houses I saw on this route. There were others but they were on offshoot roads towards the lake.

Coming back into town. Took a little different route than the map above shows, but it was for sure a 5k with all the back and fourth trying to find my way where the road split.

No real plan here. Just knew Elk Rapids was the closest county to run and instead of doing my regular run I asked Lisa if she would go to Elk Rapids or Leelanau County with me. We decided on Antrim County. I looked up Bass Lake on Map My Run website and realized that it was about a 5k just a few minutes before leaving home.

Kalkaska

Kalkaska County Run

Started on Chalker Park and turned SW on Cedar St (the main drag).

Took a picture in front of the fish fountain. Kalkaska is home to the National Trout festival.

Crossed the road and took a picture facing North.

Running past the Cemetery on Kalkaska Rd.

Found the football field and water tower.

I think there was a slight sprinkle that was off and on during this whole run. Very light sprinkle.

This is probably West St or 3rd St. Dug the shadow on the road.

Almost done with the run. Heading back to the park.

This is another one those close counties that I could just do from home. I was pretty sure that I wanted to explore the downtown area and go places that I haven’t been before. Drew up a plan on MapMyRun:

I took pictures of the map, that way I would have the map on my phone. that would give me a 5k distance if I just followed the map. Problem: sometimes you can’t see that phone in the sunlight. also it’s difficult to read the street names on screen while running. You’ll notice that my completed run doesn’t match this map, but it’s similar.

Also, before the run I really wanted to shoot hoops. I hadn’t done that in a while. So I offered a kid playing basketball $1 if he could beat me in a game of horse. No charge if I beat him. Really I just wanted to shoot a basketball. He did beat me, but it was close.

Clare

Clare County Run

Creig and I getting ready to do this run. Thanks for running with me!

My grandparents home where my sister Lisa now lives. I remember watching the trains go by as a child through that large window behind the stop sign.

Across the road from downtown. They now have a Caboose on display near where the train tracks were.

Down the now trail is the old water tower. Or maybe it was a coal tower… It’s been there all my life.

Road, I’ve learned that I can’t take pictures while I’m running or they turn out like this…

Park where I played basketball and other stuff as a child.

This is the small ice cream shop my parents owned as a kid. Also the end of my run. I ran around Perch lake, where I used to fish (a lot) as a child.

Really wasn’t much planning for this county. I’ve lived in this county for a few years of my young life. I’ve spent time in Harrison, Clare, and Farwell, but I was introduced to this county by my grandparents home in Lake. This is a small town just outside of Farwell. It has two lakes, Perch lake and Crooked lake. My grandparents owned several homes in this town. I remember this town very well and was glad to run on the rails to trails route. The same route where I used to watch trains pass along as a very young child. Very much enjoyed doing this run as this town brings back so many memories. Also, as a teen-ager my family owned the Dairy Fill, which was a little ice cream shop now called the Whistle Stop. When my parents owned it, we had an arcade in the back room. My parents now live there as well as both sisters.

Grand Traverse

Grand Traverse County Run

The VASA 5k is a trail that I have run fairly frequent. (also biked) But this year I’ve only ran it twice. It is a hilly run that is for sure hard, but not impossible. Hoping this year to be able to ski it in the winter. I’ve never cross country skied here before.

The start of the trail. It is very well marked with several different distances.

Breaking off of the main trail on to the 5k trail, this is when it starts getting hilly. This runner passed me on my run.

Bad photo but this is a VERY steep terrain. I’m learning to pause running when I take photos!

Love the signs at the end of the trail. I didn’t donate that day, but often do. My last donation was last year after my last “bike” ride of the season.
There’s no doubt I’ll continue to run this trail several time before I complete this runmi5k project.

This was my second run a month later and it was MUCH faster. 1:25 faster!

Again faster than the first one, would have been nice to see even more improvement, but not this go. But was so happy to have run under 10-minute miles in my past 5k race. Hoping to be able to someday do this route in under 30 minutes.

This is my home. I’ve run all over this county. Most of my runs are on the tart trial at the base of East Bay, at the Civic Center, the Vasa Trail or along Boardman Lake. I’ve also run several seasons with the Traverse City Track Club. I’m confident this will be the first county that is complete. However, I would love to hear from you if you have a suggestion for a particular area that I haven’t run before. At some point, I’d like to run a full marathon and I could see the Bayshore Marathon being my first. I’ve run a few half marathons and Bayshore 1/2. I’ve also run the Bayshore 10k multiple times. Back in 2005, I began my running by signing up for a couch to 5k class lead by Lisa Taylor, the High School’s Track and Cross Country coach. I was shocked that I took to it. Once finished with my C25k I immediately ran a 10k. It was difficult by totally doable and I was shocked that I was able to run the whole thing. I’ve run a lot since then but I’ve gone back and forth between being in shape and needing to start from “almost” scratch several times.
